COVID-19 sporting disasters!

Not only has the Coronavirus pandemic killed thousands of people and infected millions and caused the whole world to be in chaos, it has not even spared the sports world. All over the globe, there have been all kinds of COVID-19 sporting disasters!

For instance, the Scottish Football Association announced that due to the New Coronavirus, they would have to cancel the next domestic season. Mike Mulraney, Vice-President, Scottish Football Association said:

“We have run some pretty stark realities we think are real, meaningful and, if not probable, possible. We have three main visions we see we have to deal with as a club. One is a very restricted fanbase, which we think is a possibility. The second is how we would run a season without fans, and then it’s the total disaster scenario which we have to look at as a club, which is what if we can’t play football for another season? The last one is the one you have to look at because right now we can’t play football.”

Another one of the big COVID-19 sporting disasters, was the cancellation of Formula 1, in Singapore, Japan and Azerbaijan.

Formula 1 stated:

“These decisions have been taken due to the different challenges our promoters face in those countries. In Singapore and Azerbaijan, the long lead times required to construct street circuits made hosting the events during a period of uncertainty impossible and in Japan, ongoing travel restrictions also led to the decision not to proceed with the race.”

The NBA suspended games saying:

“The NBA is suspending gameplay following the conclusion of [Wednesday night’s] schedule of games until further notice. The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Witold Banka, president, World Anti-Doping Agency stated that athletes were  fooling themselves if they felt that they could ,ale use of the chaos that was brought about by New Coronavirus, to cheat.

Witold Banka said:

“COVID-19 is not a space for the athletes to cheat. They should not feel it is a time for cheating. Otherwise, the anti-doping agencies will use their weapons to catch them. Testing is not our only weapon and we have some strong ones. There is the athlete biological passport, there is long-term analysis of samples, there is intelligence.”

The cancelation of Wimbledon this year, was yet another one of the major COVID-19 sporting disasters. The 134th Wimbledon Championships is now scheduled to be held between June 28 and July 11, 2021.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) declared:

“It is with great regret that the main board of the All England Club and the committee of management of the championships have today decided that The Championships 2020 will be cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.”

Even the French Open, has been postponed and is now scheduled to be held after the end of the U.S. Open.

Amelie Mauresmo, former Wimbledon champion Tweeted:

“I think we’re going to have to draw a line under the 2020 tennis season. International circuit = players of all nationalities plus management, spectators and people from the 4 corners of the world who bring these events to life. No vaccine = no tennis.”

The National Hockey League (NHL) suspended its season saying:

“Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup.”

And even the Olympics have been cancelled.

Truly, there have been all kinds of COVID-19 sporting disasters!
