US Open 2020 to be held in spite of Coronavirus pandemic!
In spite of the killer Coronavirus, it appears that the USTA (United States Tennis Association) is going all out to hold the US Open 2020 on schedule. The US Open is scheduled to be held in New York and the USTA is making all efforts to ensure that the event is held as per schedule.
But, the organizers of the US Open 2020 are also considering alternative plans to hold the tournament.
“We are exploring every possibility around the US Open 2020.” – USTA
Chris Widmaier, USTA spokesperson, said that the organizers of the US Open 2020 were very firm about their stance and that it was their wish to hold the event at the scheduled venue and date.
Chris Widmaier also said that that the USTA was also open to the concept of holding the tournament behind closed doors.
Currently the US Open is scheduled to start on August 31, at the regular venue. But New York is the epicenter of the Coronavirus pandemic in America and as such the tournament is under threat.
Mike Dowse, USTA Chief of Operations, said:
“Time is on our side at this point as the last Grand Slam. Obviously our ambition is to run the tournament. Having said that, it won’t be the driving factor. The driving factor is the health and well-being of our players, fans, and staff. We’ve set a time frame about June to make that decision.”
There are also reports circulating, which state that the organizers of the US Open 2020, plan to stage the tournament at the Indian Wells venue.
Chris Widmaier added:
“We understand that there is a great deal of speculation regarding the USTA’s planning for the 2020 US Open. We would like to clarify that while we are exploring every possibility around the US Open, the potential to shift the event location or date is not at the forefront at this point in time.”
Interestingly, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the biggest tennis stadium in America, is converted into a hospital, temporarily, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The stadium now has over 450 beds and in the stadium, about 25,000 people are fed. As the number of Novel Coronavirus are on the rise in New York, it is going to be very interesting to see how the USTA will conduct the US Open 2020.
